A hot air balloon 190 cm (more than 6 feet!) high and 140 in diameter is glued together from (somewhat) flame resistant tissue paper. This kit is an experiment with warm air, as warm is lighter than the surrounding air, it rises, taking our balloon with it. When the air cools the balloon slowly floats to earth again. The aluminium bowl is filled with methylated spirits and this is lit to provide the lift, however this does not fly with the balloon for security reasons. The balloon remains in the air for about 5 minutes then gently returns to the ground; this allows the reuse of the balloon which has taken quite some time and effort to assemble.
The art of marbling paper has been historically associated with the craft of bookbinding. The technique of marbling involves creating a multi-colored pattern of paint that floats on the surface of a gel-like medium. Paper or fabric is then laid on the surface to pick up the floating paint and transfer the design. Use the Marbling Kit to make patterned fabric or gift wrapping paper - each piece is as unique as a fingerprint!
