Children of the Forest
If you haven't read an Elsa Beskow book before, this is a great place to start! The Children of the Forest is a lovely story about a little family who lives in the woods. The illustrations are full of accurate botannical details and offer a lot to look at over and over again. We love this book so much that our copy has been read to tatters over the years.

The Sun Egg
One day a little elf finds an astonishingly odd orange egg in the forest. She wonders what it could possibly be, until her fellow forest folk discover that this strange new egg is filled with sweet, delicious juice. The elf is sad that her "egg" has been used up, but a kindly thrush offers to take her south for the winter where the trees are filled with "sun eggs". I think all of us in Alaska can completely relate to this book!

The Wonderful Adventures of Nils
In this illustrated edition of the classic Swedish folktale, Nils is shrunk to a tiny size by a dwarf and is carried off across Sweden by a flock of wild geese to their summer home in the far North. This is a long, illustrated book--the length of a chapter book. We enjoy reading this one when the migratory birds return in the spring.

D'Aulaire's Book of Trolls
Silly and outlandish, this book brings trolls of all kinds to life—mountain trolls, forest trolls, trolls who live underwater and trolls who live under bridges, uncouth, unkempt, unbreakable, unforgettable, and invariably unbelievably ugly trolls—who work their wiles and carry on in the most bizarre and entertaining fashions. We love this book!

Tales from African Dreamtime
“Like all folk tales, there is often a moral lurking in the African traditional story. The values that one can detect in these African stories are the deep values of African societies, and we are given a glimpse of what it is that makes Sub-Saharan Africa so special.” (Alexander McCall Smith, from his foreword)
